Alexander Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh (popularly known as Onyeocha N’Aba) is a Nigerian businessman, philanthropist, and politician currently serving as a member of the 10th House of Representatives, representing the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Early Life and Education

Born in Igbere, Bende LGA, Abia State, Ikwechegh comes from the family of the late Chief and Lolo Mascot Ukandu Ikwechegh.

  • Education: He attended Constitution Crescent Primary School in Abia and the Hope Waddell Training Institute in Calabar.

  • Higher Education: He graduated with honors in Business Management from the University of Calabar.

  • Family Heritage: His father was a notable businessman and philanthropist, a path Alex followed early in his professional life.

Professional & Business Career

Before his prominent role in national politics, Ikwechegh established himself as a successful entrepreneur:

    • GrossField Group: He is the Chairman and CEO of this conglomerate, which has interests in Real Estate, Construction, Oil and Gas, and Forex Management.

    • Philanthropy: Through the Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, he has funded numerous social welfare projects, including:

      • Renovating secondary schools and public utility offices (like NEPA cash offices).

      • Providing free scholarships to over 250 underprivileged students.

      • Donating vehicles to vigilante groups and medical outreach programs.

The Milestones

Ikwechegh holds a unique place in Nigerian political history due to his early start:

  • Youngest Council Chairman: At just 28 years old, he was elected Chairman of the Aba North Local Government Council, making him the youngest person to hold such a position in Nigeria’s history.

  • National Assembly (2023–Present): He was elected to the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

  • Party Defection (March 2024): In a significant political move, he resigned from APGA and joined the Labour Party (LP), citing his alignment with Governor Alex Otti’s leadership style and policy direction.

  • Legislative Focus: He has been active in promoting Aba-made products and has toured major markets to engage with small-scale business owners to improve local commerce.

PUBLIC OPINIONS:

Public sentiment toward Ikwechegh is polarized, shaped by both his philanthropic work and high-profile incidents:

  • “Onyeocha N’Aba”: Among many constituents, he is regarded as a “man of the people” due to his grassroots accessibility and long-standing charitable investments in the Aba metropolis.

  • Bolt Driver Assault Incident (October 2024): He faced severe public backlash and was arrested by the Nigerian Police following a viral video showing him allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja. During the altercation, he was recorded claiming he could make the man “disappear.”

    • Resolution: He later issued a public apology, stating he had reached a “respectful resolution” with the driver, though the House of Representatives initiated an ethics investigation into the matter.

  • Political Strategist: Analysts view his defection to the Labour Party in 2026 as a major “signing” for the party, potentially reshaping the political landscape in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.
