Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa is the current Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly. He represents the Aba South State Constituency and was elected as a first-term lawmaker in 2023 under the Labour Party (LP).


Biography and Education

  • Birth: Born on October 19, 1966, in Nnentu Village, Aba South Local Government Area.

  • Academic Background:

    • Earned a B.A. (Hons) in English/Literary Studies (1987–1991) from the University of Cross River State (now University of Uyo).

    • Later pursued professional training in the United States, obtaining certification from the Barney Fletcher School of Real Estate in Atlanta, Georgia (2001).

    • Completed advanced real estate courses at the Metrobrokers/GMAC Real Estate Academy in 2002.

Professional Background

Before his prominent legislative role, Emeruwa built a career spanning international finance and real estate:

  • Finance (USA): Worked as an Accounts Management Representative at Nova Systems INC (1996–1999) and an Accounts Management Specialist at First North American National Bank (1999–2001), where he managed Visa/Mastercard credit card portfolios.

  • Real Estate: Served as an independent real estate salesperson in the U.S. starting in 2001.

  • Local Governance: He served as the Executive Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area from 2016 to 2018. During this time, he was recognized as one of the “Best Performing Chairmen in Nigeria” (2017) by the Local Government Chairmen Merit Award (LOGMA).

Since his election as Speaker in June 2023, Emeruwa has overseen several significant legislative achievements:

  • Legislative Output: Under his leadership, the 8th Abia Assembly passed 37 bills within its first two years.

    • Abia State Electricity Law (2025): Aimed at allowing the state to control its power generation to enhance industrialization.

    • Greater Aba Development Authority Law (2024): Focused on the urban renewal of the commercial hub.

    • Abia State Pensions Reform Law (2024): Targeted at resolving long-standing pension issues.

  • Historic Record: In May 2024, the Assembly achieved a milestone where 18 bills were assented to in a single day, a record for the state’s legislature.

  • Advocacy for Tenants: Emeruwa has received public praise for his responsiveness to grassroots issues. For instance, in 2025, he addressed petitions regarding the exploitation of tenants by house agents and landlords, calling for legislative intervention to cap agent commissions.

  • Inclusive Governance: He is generally viewed as a consensus builder. His rapid rise from a first-term lawmaker to the Speaker’s seat was attributed to his ability to foster a harmonious relationship among colleagues from different political backgrounds.
