Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Odinaka Onuoha is a distinguished Nigerian politician, estate manager, and advocate. She represents the Isiala Mbano/Okigwe/Onuimo Federal Constituency of Imo State in the 10th National Assembly.
As the first female federal legislator from the Okigwe Senatorial Zone, she has become a central figure in the push for gender inclusivity and institutional reform within the Nigerian parliament.
Early Life: Born on December 21, 1977, she is a native of Umunachi Osu-Ama in Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State.
Education: She holds a B.Sc. in Estate Management from the University of Lagos and a Master’s degree in Environmental Planning and Protection from the University of Abuja.
Professional Background: Before her legislative career, she served as a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Bayelsa State on International Development Cooperation and worked as a consultant on international investment and development.
She is married with four children. Often referred to by the title “Princess,” she is known for maintaining a balance between her traditional roots in Imo State and her professional life in Abuja. She is a frequent speaker at international forums, including the Women Political Leaders (WPL) network.
Princess Onuoha is a high-ranking member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is noted for her rapid ascent into key leadership roles:
Chairman of the House Committee on TETFund: In the 10th Assembly, she chairs the committee overseeing the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and Other Services. In this role, she is a leading voice on education financing, institutional accountability, and gender-responsive budgeting.
Advocate for Disabilities: During the 9th Assembly, she served as the pioneer Chairperson of the Committee on Disabilities and Special Needs, where she played a critical role in operationalizing Nigeria’s Disability Act.
Historical Speaker Aspiration: In 2023, she made history by being one of the few women to formally contest for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, advocating for a female-led legislature to promote equity.
Party Leadership: In early 2026, she was appointed to the APC Constitution Amendment Committee, further cementing her influence in the national party structure.
Public perception of Hon. Miriam Onuoha frames her as a “trailblazer” for women in Nigerian politics:
The “Gender Champion”: She is widely respected by civil society groups and women’s rights advocates for her consistent support of the “Seat Reservation Bill” and other reforms aimed at increasing female representation in government.
Technocratic Focus: Among her colleagues, she is viewed as an expert in environmental and educational policy. Her work with TETFund has earned her a reputation for being thorough and focused on ensuring that educational grants reach marginalized communities and disability-friendly infrastructure projects.
Resilience: Her political journey is often cited as an example of resilience; she initially won her seat through a hard-fought rerun election in 2020 and has since solidified her hold on the Okigwe North constituency through high visibility and consistent project delivery.
