Rt. Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe is a seasoned Nigerian politician and a key figure in the Labour Party (LP). He currently serves as a member of the 10th House of Representatives, representing the Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South Federal Constituency of Abia State.
Born on May 1, 1972, in Abia State, Onwusibe is often described as a “grassroots general” due to his long climb through almost every level of local and state governance.
Education: He is an alumnus of Abia State University (ABSU), where he laid the foundation for his administrative career.
Early Career: Before his rise in politics, he was involved in sports administration and local community organizing.
Faith & Community: He is a Christian and deeply involved in the social fabric of the Ngwa community.
Sports Enthusiast: His background as a former Special Adviser on Sports continues to influence his philanthropic work, which often includes sponsoring local football tournaments and youth athletic programs.
Onwusibe’s political trajectory is unique for its “bottom-up” progression, having held positions at every tier of local government:
Local Government Veteran: He served twice as a Councillor and twice as the Executive Chairman of Isiala Ngwa North LGA. He also served as a Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports.
State Assembly (2019–2023): He represented Isiala Ngwa North in the Abia State House of Assembly, where he gained a reputation for being an outspoken lawmaker.
National Assembly (2023–Present): He moved to the House of Representatives in 2023. He currently serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes, a high-profile role tasked with oversight of anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC.
The “30 Projects” Milestone (2025): By mid-2025, Onwusibe achieved a significant milestone by commissioning over 30 projects within two years of his federal tenure. These included:
Primary Healthcare Centres (Amairi Ovoji and Chimaobi Nwakanma).
New classroom blocks at several schools (Amuzu Okpuala Ngwa, Umuojima, and Agah Primary Schools).
Town Hall/ICT Centres in Ubaha and Umunko.
Widespread installation of solar-powered streetlights and road rehabilitation
The “Accountability King”: Among his constituents, Onwusibe is highly regarded for his “politics of projects.” His habit of frequently commissioning tangible infrastructure has earned him deep-rooted loyalty in Isiala Ngwa, where he is seen as a leader who returns federal resources directly to the people.
Inspirational Leadership: He has been publicly described by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, as an “inspirational leader,” highlighting his ability to work across party lines despite being a member of the opposition Labour Party.
Grassroots Relatability: Public sentiment often emphasizes his accessibility. Having served as a councillor and council chairman, he is viewed as a “local boy” who understands the specific needs of the Ngwa people, which has translated into high approval ratings.
Anti-Corruption Stance: In his capacity as Chairman of the Financial Crimes Committee, he is increasingly viewed by national observers as a “firm hand” in legislative oversight, advocating for more rigorous anti-money laundering frameworks.
